Evening Expositions – “Music and the People of God”

Music and songs are one of the powerful means of expression known to mankind. Whether it's in the movies, or in advertising, or in churches, music is a key way in which people express their emotions and respond to what is being showed or said. In fact, music is so much a part of our lives that to live in a world without music would be unthinkable.

Unfortunately, that also means that music can be a powerful weapon working against Christians. And in recent years, the rise in the use of music in churches has led to a great misunderstanding about the role and place of music in Christian gatherings.

So what is place of music and songs in a Christian's life? What has music and songs got to do with our emotions and the work of the Holy Spirit? What does the Bible say about the role of music and songs in Christian gatherings?

Join us as we explore these important issues over two evenings with Rev Joshua Ng, Pastor of FOCUS in Australia, and Mark Peterson, Christian singer and songwriter.

Over four talks, Rev Joshua Ng and Mark Peterson will unpack what the Bible says about "Music & the People of God" and help us to think theologically about related practical issues.

Speakers:
Joshua Ng, Pastor of FOCUS
Mark Petersen, Musician and Songwriter, EMU Music (Australia) Church

About the Speaker

Joshua Ng

JOSHUA NG is much sought after as a Bible teacher and trainer in Australia. In the last 9 years, he has been pastor of the Fellowship of Overseas Christian University Students (FOCUS) in Australia. As pastor of FOCUS, Joshua also oversees the Asian ministries of the St Matthias
group of churches in Sydney. He also regularly contributes to the highly influential evangelical magazine, The Briefing. Joshua studied theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago and Moore Theological College in Sydney. Prior to that, Joshua read medicine at Sydney
University and worked for two years as a doctor. Joshua was born in Hong Kong but migrated to Australia at the age of 7. He is married to Karen and they have twin girls and a son.

Mark Peterson

MARK PETERSON is well-known in Australia as one of its most promising young evangelical musicians and song writers. His two albums, "Highest Place" and "Whatever Happens", have been very well-received both for the quality of its music and faithful biblical lyrics. In particular, Mark Peterson's new solo album, "Whatever Happens", walks us through the book of Philippians in song. Combining some of his popular congregational songs ("Highest Place" & "The Lord Is Near") with brand new solo tracks, this album blends ballad with energetic rock. The son of a minister who is now principal of a theological college in the UK, Mark is living proof that the children of Christian workers can turn out alright! Mark is currently studying theology full-time and hopes to combine that with his musical gifts to serve the Lord and His people in the future.
